JACK
CHUNG.

Chemical engineer.
Commercial strategist.
Incoming LSE.

I build systems that turn complexity into clarity,
in molecules, in markets, and in data.

DEFINE
THE SYSTEM.

UNDERSTAND
THE VARIABLES.

MAXIMISE
THE OUTPUT.

This is how I approach everything, from reactor design to pricing strategy.

FROM MOLECULES
TO MARKETS.

The method never changed. Only the system did. I took the same thinking into a glass tower above London.

No demand planning. No analytics. No infrastructure.

tracking, for the first time

I found a working-capital leak hiding in poor inventory management and closed it, demand planning wired straight into sales data. This is where I learned the mechanics beneath the P&L: how a business actually converts stock into cash.

THE
BRIEF.

Hospices of Hope: end-of-life care across the UK and Romania. Ten weeks to build them a revenue strategy. A team of four consultants to lead and mentor.

  4. WK 10The pitch deck, delivered to the client

HOSPICES OF HOPE · WEEK TEN

GOOD WORK,
GROWING.

I taught the team to turn dense analysis into advice a non-technical client could act on, and ran it to deadline. Client-facing strategy in service of end-of-life care. The work I want more of.

THE BUILD.
ONE CONSULTANT.
TEN DOMAINS.

A knitwear factory running production on paper and memory hired one consultant to digitise all of it. The machine knits a row a week: five rows, then live.

The costing engine is a financial model, I just built mine in code instead of Excel. Sole consultant, a real client, shipped under pressure: the same muscle an analyst uses to take a business apart and deliver on a deadline.

THE ENGINEERINGUNDERNEATH.

Before any of the commercial work, there was the discipline that taught me to think this way. First: a full commercial plant on paper, designed with a team of eight.

GROUP DESIGN · TEAM OF 8 · “LYCOTEA”

A COMMERCIAL PLANT, DESIGNED FROM ZERO.

A facility producing 24 million litres a year of a lycopene-enriched functional beverage for the Chinese market, recovering lycopene by supercritical CO₂ extraction at 373 bar in a closed, solvent-free loop.

Peng-Robinson, Chrastil, Sovová, Hinze: the models were the easy part. The decision was commercial: a full DCF, NPV and sensitivity analysis that found CapEX the parameter the whole project hinged on.

The plant was the team's. The unit that came next was mine alone: six weeks, one machine, every decimal defended.

INDIVIDUAL DESIGN · HTST PASTEURISER · SIX WEEKS · SOLO

72.00 °C.
FIFTEEN SECONDS.
EXACTLY.

My unit on the LycoTea line: 4,041 litres an hour of a heat-sensitive beverage. Hot enough to satisfy Chinese food law. Gentle enough that the lycopene survives. Out at 4.00 °C for aseptic filling.

THE SHORTCUT DESIGN · TEXTBOOK ASSUMPTIONS, FOLLOWED FAITHFULLY

0

Plates. In one heat exchanger.

19,489 m² of steel — nearly three football pitches of it.

Flow so slow the heat-transfer coefficient collapsed to 4.37 W m⁻² K⁻¹.

And it degraded all the target compound.

RIGOROUS DESIGN · MATLAB · FIRST PRINCIPLES

SO I REBUILT
THE PHYSICS.

The exchanger cut into nodes along every plate. At each one: coupled energy balances, temperature-dependent properties, fouling, degradation kinetics — solved simultaneously with fsolve. No guessed coefficients. No averages.

ρ(T) Kell · cp(T) Shomate · μ(T) Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann · k(T) Choi–Okos ε-NTU nodal energy balances · corrugation-specific Nusselt correlations Kern–Seaton fouling · first-order Arrhenius lycopene kinetics Transient start-up solved too: 24.6 s to temperature, 27.56 kg diverted per start

SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS · EVERY PARAMETER AGAINST THE OUTPUT IT GOVERNS

THEN I TURNED
EVERY DIAL.

+0%

Every section’s pressure drop inside the 0.2–0.8 bar envelope. Same duty. A machine a thousand times smaller.

MECHANICAL DESIGN · ANSYS GRANTA · AUTODESK INVENTOR FEA

THEN I TRIED
TO BREAK IT.

  • 316L stainless steel — screened across price, CIP acid–alkali attack, and embodied CO₂. 36% stronger than 304 at 72 °C.
  • 2.33 × 10⁶ N of gasket compression driven into the frame plate. It flexed 0.000 mm — 0.24% of its thickness.
  • 1,000× the operating weight loaded onto the guide bar — 53.5 meganewtons. It moved 0.0057 mm.

THE RESULT

0%

81.94%of the heat recovered and reused
295.18 kWtotal thermal duty

Define the system. Understand the variables. Maximise the output. Here it was literal: six weeks, one unit, from governing equations to a machine that could be built, priced, and trusted.
